São Paulo – The European Union has shown interest in striking a partnership with Egypt to turn the African nation in a local energy hub, said the country’s minister of Petroleum, Tarek Al-Mulla (pictured above), in a speech at the Sustainable Energy Forum held in Cairo, as reported by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
On Monday (23), Egypt and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding for a new strategic cooperation in the energy sector.
The EU’s Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Canete, said that Egypt has great potential to become a regional energy hub. The European bloc, in turn, is interested in offering financial and technical , as well as expertise and technology transfer.
According to the Egyptian minister, the country has been taking “serious steps” to become a regional gas, energy and oil center. Al-Mulla said that the European Union is “an important strategic partner” to Egypt and has always ed the country when needed.
